QHHT® vs Hypnotherapy: Three Differences That Change Everything
One of the questions I'm asked most often is simple: "How is QHHT® different from regular hypnosis?"
It's a fair question. Both use hypnosis. Both work with the subconscious. But QHHT® (Quantum Healing Hypnosis Technique, by Dolores Cannon) is its own system, with its own rules, and those rules change what a session is, how long it takes, and where the answers come from.
Here are the three differences that matter most.
Why does a QHHT® session take 7 hours or more?
A typical hypnotherapy appointment lasts around an hour, and is often repeated over several visits.
A QHHT® session is one sitting of 7 hours or more, and it has two distinct parts:
A deep conversation, usually at least 3 hours. Before any hypnosis begins, we go through your life, the patterns you notice, and the questions you want to explore. This is not small talk. It is the foundation that allows the hypnosis to go deep and stay relevant to you.
The hypnosis itself, usually around 3 hours in my sessions. You are guided into a deeply relaxed yet fully conscious state, the somnambulistic level of trance that Dolores Cannon worked with, where your own subconscious can answer your questions.
Dolores Cannon's teaching was clear on both parts: the conversation should never be shorter than 3 hours, and the hypnosis should not run longer than 2. The state reached in hypnosis is a very intense one. Clients often tell me they feel remarkably warm when they wake.
In my own practice, I have found that many people today can stay in that state comfortably for around 3 hours, and that the extra time often serves their highest good. But this is never a fixed rule. Not every client can stay for 3 hours, and some stay longer. Throughout the hypnosis, I observe how you are responding, and when the time is right, I guide you back with a gentle, structured awakening. Every session is different, and every decision is made in the moment, for the person in front of me.
The length is not padding. It is what the process needs, and it cannot be compressed. It is also why I work with only one client a day.
Does QHHT® use suggestion, like hypnotherapy?
No. This is the clearest line between the two.
Many forms of hypnotherapy use suggestion: the therapist introduces a new instruction to the subconscious to help change a habit or a response. That approach has its place, and it works for many people with a specific goal in mind.
QHHT® does not work that way. Dolores Cannon strictly prohibited QHHT® practitioners from implanting suggestions of any kind. Nothing is inserted. Nothing is programmed.
Instead, QHHT® is an excavation. We go inward and bring forward what is already there. Every insight in a session comes from you, not from me. My role is to hold the space and ask the questions; the answers are yours.
For many of my clients, particularly those who are used to thinking for themselves, this matters a great deal. They are not looking to be told what to think. They are looking to hear, clearly, what they already know.
Why is one QHHT® session usually enough?
Hypnotherapy is often designed as a series, with each session building on the last.
Dolores Cannon designed QHHT® differently. She did not encourage people to return for session after session. She encouraged them to take the wisdom from their session and live it.
That is also why the depth is different. What surfaces in a QHHT® session is not always fully understood on the day. Many of my clients tell me that it was one year, two years, or even longer before they truly understood the meaning of an insight they received. It unfolds in ordinary moments, as life gives them the context to recognise it.
This does not mean QHHT® can only ever be done once. It means something more important: your life is yours to live.
QHHT® is a professional service. No one can count on the same professional being there for every chapter of their life, and more fundamentally, a life cannot be outsourced. The steps forward are always yours to take.
Some people do return to QHHT® years later, when they feel it is truly needed. By then, they are no longer the person they were at their first session. They may choose to work with the same practitioner again, or with someone else, and either choice is right if it is theirs.
As a responsible practitioner, I follow Dolores Cannon's teaching: I approach every session as if it is both the first and the last. That intention is what gives a single day its depth.
So which one is right for me?
They serve different purposes.
If you have a specific habit or response you want to change, and you want a practitioner to guide that change through suggestion, hypnotherapy may suit you.
If you want to understand yourself more deeply, and you would rather the answers come entirely from within you, QHHT® may be what you are looking for. It is not counselling, and it is not a spiritual course. It is a structured way to access your own subconscious, and to hear what it has to say.
In short
Session length. Hypnotherapy: around 1 hour. QHHT®: 7+ hours in one sitting.
Structure. Hypnotherapy: often a series of sessions. QHHT®: each session approached as the first and the last.
Method. Hypnotherapy: often uses suggestion. QHHT®: no suggestion or programming of any kind.
Source of insight. Hypnotherapy: guided by the therapist. QHHT®: comes entirely from the client.
